Help Homeless Pets!

Set Up a Shelter Collection

Mission: From treats to toys to towels, animal shelters are often in need of supplies. Organize a collection of items to donate to your shelter.

Step 1: Make a list. First, call or visit the shelter to find out what’s needed. They might ask for:

food and treats for cats, dogs, hamsters, birds, and other pets
kitty litter
washable chew toys and other playthings
first-aid supplies, such as bandages and cotton balls
soft towels and blankets for animals to sleep on
office supplies, such as paper, postage stamps, and cleaning supplies

Step 2: Make it known.
Design posters letting everyone know you’re holding a collection. Explain what items the animal shelter needs and where teachers and kids can bring them. Good drop-off spots include the gym, cafeteria, library, and classrooms. Set up large cardboard boxes in each location. For fun, decorate them with pictures of cats and dogs.

Put your posters up around school. Ask your principal if you can make announcements on the PA system. Write to your town’s newspaper to let readers know how they can help. Set a deadline for dropping off donations. Include that date in all your announcements.

He did it! Alex Fischer collected 250 items, including pet beds, kitty condos, litter pans, and 100 cans of cat and dog food, for the Arizona Humane Society. Read more in the Hall of Fame.

Step 3: Make the news. Call local newspapers, radio stations, and TV stations. Describe your project and ask if they would send a reporter to cover your story and take pictures. That could inspire others to hold their own shelter collection! It will also remind people about the animals the shelter has up for adoption. If you do set up an interview, be sure to let your organization know.

Step 4: Make their day. When your collection is over, arrange for a parent or teacher to bring the supplies to the shelter.

Step 5: Make us aware. After you’ve dropped off the items, fill out our Mission: Accomplished form.
