Hold a Fund-Raiser

Mission: If the thing your animal organization is most in need of is money, hold a fund-raiser. We’ve listed some money-making ideas below. For more ideas and tips, check out our Speak Up for Animals! guide.

Step 1: Make a plan.
Use one of our suggestions below or come up with your own fund-raiser.

Organize a “run for the animals” or a walk-a-thon at your school or community track or athletic fields. Have everyone taking part find sponsors to give a certain amount of money per mile covered. If the organization you’re working with already holds a fund-raising run or walk, form a team to collect donations and walk together.

She did it! 2006 KIND Kid of the Year Sara Wetzel held a penny drive to benefit her local animal shelter. Read more in the Hall of Fame.

Hold a “Coins for Critters” or “Pennies for Pets” coin collection at school. (Get permission from your principal first.) Decorate collection canisters with pictures of dogs and cats and info about the shelter for which you’re raising money. Go to classrooms and present info about the organization. Ask students and teachers to donate spare change. You can also ask if you can place collection canisters at local businesses.

Raise some dough by baking and selling cat treats or dog biscuits. (Try these easy recipes.) See if a local business will donate the baking supplies you need. Ask for permission to set up a sales booth in a public place, where you can also hand out fliers on animal issues. Or, set up a booth in the animal shelter’s lobby!

Step 2: Make the donation. When your fund-raiser is over, bring the money you’ve raised to the shelter. Call ahead to schedule a good time. The shelter may want to make an event out of it. If they do, call local newspapers and radio and TV stations and ask if they would like to cover the event.

Step 3: Make us aware. Once you’ve made the donation, fill out our Mission: Accomplished form.
