Get to know the three chimpanzees who live at
Cleveland
Amory Black Beauty Ranch, a sanctuary for rescued animals. Then
watch a video of them!
Lulu
For
many years, Lulu lived in a cage at a New York research lab. When the
facility closed in 1997, she (along with her pal Midge, below) was one
of the few primates to be retired to a sanctuary. Earlier in her life,
Lulu had been trained to use a toilet, wear clothes, and brush her
teeth. Today, this super-smart chimp knows how to get what she wants.
She fills up her mouth with water to spit at her caretakers if she
doesn't get the sweet treats she likes!
Midge
Midge
spent his early years in the same lab as Lulu. But judging from his
agreeable personality, you would never guess his difficult past.
Believed to be about 33 years old, he loves to run around outside and
play tug of war with Lulu and Kitty. Midge also likes to be surrounded
by loud noises. He'll push around furniture just to hear the sound it
makes. He's a big music fan too. His preference? Rock 'n roll—the
louder, the better!
Kitty
Though
her early life is a mystery, Kitty was probably captured from the wild
in Africa. Before coming to the ranch, she lived in a research lab as a
"breeder." She gave birth to many babies to supply the lab with more
chimps. Now life is more carefree for this bright, affectionate, and
patient chimp. Kitty likes to solve problems and play with complex toys.
She also knows how to trade objects in order to get something she wants.
