Military Might

Ft. Belvoir Elementary School is located on a military base in the greater Washington, D.C. area. Many of the students at the school have at least one parent serving in Iraq and other places around the world. Yet, even while they're missing and worrying about their loved ones, students at Ft. Belvoir find time to teach others the importance of being kind to animals.

Each month, students in Mrs. McKay's, Mrs. Bishop's, and Mrs. Elam's fourth-grade classes read and discuss KIND News. Then they share what they've learned with the rest of the students in the school. The fourth-graders have created posters and displayed them in school hallways. They've written and illustrated "Animal Prayer Poems" and "Christmas Wishes for Animals." Throughout the school year the kids hold fundraisers. Then, at the end of the year, they present what they've collected to The Humane Society of the United States for its programs to help animals.

"Kindness to Others" is a big part of the school curriculum at Ft. Belvoir. It's nice to know that the kindness taught in the school also includes the animals who share our world. Thanks kids!
